"On the Right Track to College" Conference
4/8/2008 7:40:55 AM
April 5 — GEAR UP and the Hidalgo Parental Involvement program held their first conference “On the Right Track to College” at HECHS. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences of Texas A&M in collaboration with the Region One GEAR UP Bridges to the Future Partnership have taken bold steps to get parents and students information to attain a higher level of education. The conference focused on information to ensure the parents understand the importance of grades, graduation requirements, HECHS graduation plans, college entrance exams, and financial aid.
The sessions were given by freshmen parent volunteers who have been trained by GEAR UP and the Abriendo Puertas programs.  Tina Atkins, Region One GEAR UP Director, and Nicole Luna, UTPA Financial Aid Advisor were also here for several sessions.

The conference started at 8 a.m. with the student/parent registration, and provided lunch for the families to energize them for the afternoon sessions, which ended by 2:30 p.m. “Parents and students were so involved with sessions activities” Mrs. Garcia added “they realized the importance of the information given and we are expecting a great result from this conference
HECHS Students Engage In The Political Process Through The Academic Star Award Program In The Social Sciences
4/7/2008 8:00:34 AM
“The goals of The Academic Star Award Program in the Social Sciences is to provide opportunities to excel in Government or Political Science and Economics for high school, AP, concurrent and college credit and motivate young leaders to become active in their communities”, Nelva Sosa-Slage explains.  For HECHS senior students, this includes “the ability to integrate classroom topics with the Primary Election by researching the issues, debating the positions of candidates, attending speakers’ forums, registering new voters, campaigning for candidates, participating in rallies and conventions, evaluating poll and election statistics and casting own vote to list a few” Mrs. Sosa-Slage added.

In short, HECHS students understand the significance of continuing to be engaged in the process even after the General Election in November for they want to educate others as to how it works.

The Pleasure of Your Presence is Required...
4/4/2008 1:19:41 PM
Arrangements were made, invitations sent out, students were ready to get married by 10 a.m. in the school’s cafeteria. Don’t be alarmed, this was just a Preparation for Parenting class project.  The class is designed to provide students opportunities to develop knowledge and skills in preparation to function effectively in the role of parent.  Students have to go through the whole process of meeting a partner, getting to know him/her, propose, get married, and become parents.  “Students are thought that the parenting process doesn’t start when first have your child, but since you choose the person you are getting married to” Ms. Negrete said.
The ceremony was conducted by Mrs. Arismendez, who acted as judge, she gave them their marriage certificates, the brides threw their bouquets and the party started.  Next week the students will embark in their new project: pregnancy, and child birth.  “The course is very high paced, and even though all life adversities can’t be predicted or covered in class, I believe it gives our students a very good idea of the great responsibility it is to be a parent” Ms. Negrete added
