ISD serves over 190 special education students. The Special Education Program in the district is known for its overall low percentage of identified special education students and for successful academic programs for those who are identified. The special education students make up 8.5% of the total population compared to the close to 14% in other school districts in the Region One area.
In April of 2006, Hidalgo ISD hosted its first Area I Rio Grande Valley Special Olympics where close to 800 athletes competed.
