According to Abraham Maslow (1968), who described a hierarchy of human needs, only the need for survival is more basic than the need for safety. Studies confirm the need for safety and order; orderly classrooms promote both learning and student motivation (Purkey&Smith, 1983, Radd, 1998, Wang, Haertel, & Walberg, 1993). For that reason, at Salinas Elementary student safety is a high priority and although the District has implemented safety procedures, it becomes essential that students cooperate by following a series of safety guidelines to ensure the safety of everyone.
Avoid conduct that is likely to put the student or other student at risk.
Follow the behavioral standards in the student handbook and the Student Code of Conduct, as well as any additional rules for behavior and safety set by the principal, teachers, or bus drivers. Remain alert to and promtly report to a teacher or the principal any safety hazards, such as intruders on campus or threats made by any person toward a student or staff member. Know emergency evacuation routes and signals. Follow immediately the instructions of teachers, bus drivers, and other District employees who are overseeing the welfare of students.
From time to time, students and staff will participate in emergency procedures drills. When the alarm is sounded, students should follow the direction of teachers or others in charge quickly, quietly, and in an orderly manner. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
