Overview
Learning is best accomplished by "doing", and it is upon this concept that the Hidalgo Independent School District promotes its Science Fair. Participation in the development of a science fair project enables students to: *Improve critical thinking skills *Develop an interest in science, math, engineering or related careers *Explore a field of science that may be of particular interest *Experience educational growth though scienctific research *Gain an understanding of the scientific method *Increase communication skills *Share results with others *Receive public recognition for accomplishment
As students develop thier science fair projects, teachers clearly emphasize the learning experience. The type of science investigation varies according to students' grade level, as noted below. Students at the secondary beginning in 5th grade level will follow the gidelines as specified in the International Science and Engineering Fair Rules and Guidelines book.
Kindergarten: using observation skills to make comparisons 1st grade: classifying objects in collections 2nd grade: collecting data through observation and measurement 3rd grade: constructing models 4th/5th grades: replicating textbook experiments
