Maria Fletcher
Fifth Grade Maria P. Fletcher was born in the latter half of the 20th century in Tabasco Mexico. She is one of nine children from a loving Mexican Family. At the University Autonoma of Tabasco, Maria studied for and received a degree in Dentistry, she was 4th in her class. In 1983 while vacationing with her parents, Maria met an American visiting Mexico. Six years later they married and now have 4 wonderful children together. After coming to the United States in 1990 and learning how to Speak English, Maria decided to change her career from Dentistry to teaching. She learned more about the American culture and studied at University of Texas Pan American. Maria eventually joined the teaching profession in 2002 and began working at Hidalgo Elementary. Her initial assignment was PK-3 and later changed to First Grade. Currently Maria P. Fletcher, using all her education and life experiences teaches Spanish and English speaking 5th graders. Her subject field is Science.

Mrs. Edna Castorena, 5th Grade Teacher
Edna Estrada-Castorena was born in McAllen, Texas but raised in Reynosa, Tamaulipas Mexico. Edna is the oldest of three children. Her parents decided that they needed to bring their family to live in the U.S. when Edna was fifteen. They had many choices to choose from where to live but were compelled to move to Hidalgo because of the advantageous school district. They believed that living in Hidalgo would bring many opportunities for not only them but also their children. Edna began her schooling in Reynosa but then she moved to Hidalgo where she started as a freshman at Hidalgo High School. She graduated from Hidalgo H.S. in 1997 as a salutatorian overcoming language barriers and social problems. After high school, Edna attended UTPA where she strived and graduated in four years magna cum laude, with a bachelor in International Business. While attending UTPA, Edna met her husband, Jess Castorena. They now have two children, Elliott and Ian. After graduating in 2002, Edna found her current career as an early childhood teacher at Hidalgo Elementary.
